USE OF AGRICULTURAL PARAFOLUTES IN ORGANIC FOOD PRODUCTION BY COMPOSTING – AgroWasteCompost

The event “Utilization of agricultural by-products in the production of organic soil amendments through composting – AgroWasteCompost“, organized by the company “Evritika Kellaria” with the support of ena Development Consultants and the collaboration of the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics, Democritus University of Thrace.

The event took place on Friday, June 3, 2022, at the “Zafiris Abbas” Auditorium of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Forestry of the Democritus University of Thrace in Orestiada.

The Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences & Forestry, Democritus University of Thrace, Mr. Galattsidas Spyridon, the President of the Department of Rural Development, Democritus University of Thrace, Mr. Chatzisavvidis Christos, as well as the representative of the Special Management Agency of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, Mrs. Athanasiou Konstantina.

The main purpose of the event was the presentation of the results of the very important research carried out by the Laboratory of Applied Microbiology & Biotechnology of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Democritus University of Thrace on behalf of and in cooperation with the company “Evritika Kellaria S.A.” in the framework of the action “Investment Projects for Innovation, Research & Development, in the priority sector of RIS3” of the Operational Programme “Eastern Macedonia & Thrace” (NSRF 2014-2020).

The cycle of presentations was opened by the Managing Director of Evritika Kellaria S.A., Mr. Harovas Vasilios, with a brief presentation of the history and future of the company.

At the same time, the participants had the opportunity to learn about the available and expected financial tools to support similar and other business ventures, during the speech of the General Manager of ena Development Consultants , Mr.

During the main presentations of the information event, the Associate Professor of the Democritus University of Thrace, Mr. Genetics of the Democritus University of Thrace, Ms. Karapantzou Ioanna, presented the important activities of the Laboratory of Applied Microbiology & Biotechnology, with emphasis on the project “AgroWasteCompost” and the so far very encouraging results of the research carried out within the framework of the project.

The very interesting results of the research carried out by the company “Evritika Kellaria” in collaboration with the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Democritus University of Thrace within the framework of the action “Innovation, Research & Innovation Investment Projects”.Development, in the priority area of RIS3” of the Operational Programme “Eastern Macedonia & Thrace 2014-2020” were presented at the informative workshop “Utilization of agricultural by-products in the production of organic soil amendments through composting – AgroWasteCompost (Final Project Results)” The event was held on Friday, February 17, at the Evros Chamber of Commerce, in Alexandroupolis.

The aim of the AgroWasteCompost project is to develop innovative technologies for the utilization of agricultural by-products from wineries for the production of high value-added organic fertilizer, contributing to the protection of the environment and the optimization of the fertility of agricultural soils.

The event was honored with the presence of representatives of the Region of Eastern Macedonia & Thrace, the Municipality of Alexandroupolis, the Chamber of Evros and the Democritus University of Thrace.

Ioannis Tokatlidis, President of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics of the Democritus University of Thrace, in his address to the event, referred to the mutual benefit of collaborations between Research Institutions and companies in the context of funding actions. Mr. Tokatlidis, also in his capacity as an Agricultural Engineer, stressed the importance of the results of projects such as AgroWasteCompost for the improvement of the productive capacity of Greek soils.

Then, Vassilis Kasapidis, Head of Business Advisory Support of the Chamber of Evros, gave his own short address, referring to the great value of the presence of the Democritus University of Thrace in the region of Thrace. He also stressed the need to link the market and research so that the results of research can be directly applied in practice. Following his brief address, Mr. Kasapidis stated the active support of the Evros Chamber of Commerce in remarkable development initiatives in the region, such as that of the company “Evritika Kellaria“.

On behalf of the Region, the event was attended by Vassilis Delistamatis, Thematic Vice-Regional Head of Agricultural Economy & Veterinary, Eastern Macedonia & Veterinary Thrace. Mr. Delistamatis welcomed the innovation introduced by the AgroWasteCompost project, recognizing the recycling and utilization of plant residues as a one-way street for tomorrow. He also mentioned that both the Region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace as an institution and the Greek society as a whole now have the necessary maturity to support initiatives such as AgroWasteCompost.

The event was also attended by the Deputy Mayor of Primary Sector, Agrotourism & D.E. Fera of the Municipality of Alexandroupolis, Dimitris Kolgionis .

The presentations under the agenda of the event were opened by Vassilis Harovas, CEO of “Evritiki Kellaria”, who warmly welcomed the attendees and then gave a brief presentation of the company’s progress, emphasizing its participation over the years in research activities and development projects.

On the part of the University’s project team, Ioannis Kourkoutas, Professor of the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics, DUTH, who informed the audience about the main points of the AgroWasteCompost project , after a brief reference to the work of the Laboratory ofApplied Microbiology &Genetics, and a presentation of the project.Biotechnology” that implemented it and the actions in which it participates. Mr. Kourkoutas said that the results of the research carried out in the framework of this project are of great importance for the wider region of Thrace and the rest of Greece.

The final research results of the project were presented by Ioanna Karapantzou, PhD Candidate of the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics. During its implementation, microbial composting systems, earthworm composting system and a combination of microbial composting and earthworm composting system were tested. Among the important results of the research it was found that the products produced had low C/N, pH between 6.5-7.5, heavy metal content within the limits of European legislation, while their use in barley seed germination showed that they are not phytotoxic.

The event was closed by Dimitris Bardakidis, co-founder, General Manager and Head of Primary Sector Development Strategy of ena Development Consultants, with a brief presentation of the company and a more extensive reference to the available financial tools and innovations that offer opportunities for further development in the Agri-food sector.
